Professor José Pacheco, known for his work at Escola da Ponte, in Portugal, participates in meetings about education, always offering interesting insights into teaching, learning and educational institutions.
At a TEDx conference, he comments on the issue of students' intellectual autonomy, and how the school should encourage critical and original thinking to allow for a transformation in society.
"Schools are not buildings. The schools are people. And people are their values, "says Pacheco to explain that the school must be able to create spaces with common values capable of sharing ideas that educate.
The social transformation by the school
He and other professors developed a project at the Escola da Ponte that focused on three important values: autonomy, solidarity and responsibility. They considered that these should be the main axes for the development of the educational project.
One of the values of this project, responsibility, was possible to be taught through the collective principles realized within the project that involved cooperation. And in a multiplying way, they felt that the project also changed the houses of the students, offering possibilities for a social transformation.
The teacher defends that schools and their teachers can make an education that is a citizen, made in conjunction with families. But it is not enough to apply the so-called "education for projects": projects for peace, projects for health, projects for environmental preservation, among others. It is necessary to make a new school project.
"A country project, a school project. Still the school has to conceive new social constructions of learning that substitute that old model, emphasizes. Knowledge must be constructed to be placed socially, and we must avoid the theoretical replies that come from idioms and from the outside.
