Shipwreck

I am having a hard time with watercolor. I dont cannot grasp the concept of values, as well as showing the emphasis over the subordinates. Every thing ends up looking very two dimensional. I am always excited about my initial drawing, and then get upset when i cannot do what i want with watercolor. Any tips or tricks on using watercolor paints will be greatly appreciated.

Also this is done on a moleskine sketchbook, but I am having the same difficulty with the watercolor book.
